How the gold rate is set in India
IBJA, a trade body in Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar, collects buying and selling quotes from bullion dealers and publishes an opening and a closing benchmark each trading day. The rate follows the international gold price in dollars, the rupee exchange rate and import duty. Lower purities are priced in proportion to their gold content, so 22 carat (916) is 91.6% of the 24 carat (999) rate.
Questions people ask
What is the 22 carat gold rate today?
The IBJA benchmark for 22 carat (916) gold is ₹12,918 a gram, or ₹1,29,177 for 10 grams, as of the 6 November 2026, opening (AM) rate. Add 3% GST and it comes to ₹1,33,052 for 10 grams, before making charges.
Why does my jeweller charge more than this rate?
This is a wholesale benchmark. A jeweller adds 3% GST, making charges (a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram, set by each shop) and sometimes a hallmarking fee. City rates also differ a little because of local transport, demand and the margins of local jewellers' associations.
What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K gold?
Carat measures purity. 24 carat (999) is 99.9% gold and is used for coins and bars. 22 carat (916) is 91.6% gold, hard enough for most jewellery. 18 carat (750) is 75% gold and is common for diamond settings. IBJA prices each one in proportion to its gold content.
What are the AM and PM rates?
IBJA publishes two benchmarks each trading day: an opening (AM) rate and a closing (PM) rate later in the day. This page shows the latest one published. Sovereign Gold Bond prices and gold loan valuations use IBJA rates.
Why is there no new rate today?
IBJA does not publish on Saturdays, Sundays or market holidays, and on trading days the opening rate appears partway through the day. Until then, the last published rate stays on this page.
