How PPF interest works
PPF pays interest once a year, at the end of the financial year, and adds it to your balance. Next year you earn interest on that interest too. The rate is set by the government every quarter and applies to your whole balance, so it can rise or fall during the life of your account.
Because the interest is tax-free, 7.1% in PPF is worth more than it looks. For someone in the 30% tax bracket, a taxable deposit would need to pay about 10.14% before tax to match it.

Questions people ask
What is the PPF interest rate now?
7.1% a year for October-December 2026, compounded yearly. The government reviews it every quarter. See the PPF interest rate page for the latest figure.
How much will ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF become in 15 years?
At 7.1%, depositing ₹1.5 lakh at the start of every year for 15 years grows to about ₹40,68,209. You put in ₹22.5 lakh; the rest, ₹18,18,209, is tax-free interest.
When should I deposit to earn the most interest?
PPF interest for each month is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month. A yearly deposit made by 5 April earns interest for the whole year, which is what this calculator assumes.
Can I continue PPF after 15 years?
Yes. You can extend the account in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. Pick 20, 25 or 30 years in the calculator to see the effect of extending.
Is PPF interest taxable?
No. PPF is exempt at all three stages: deposits qualify for the 80C deduction in the old tax regime, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free under both regimes.
